Captains Jonathan and Vickie Harvey have been Salvation Army officers for 6 years – however their experience as leaders within this international organization spans more than two decades.
In 2001, the Captains felt a strong calling to Salvation Army Officership. As they prepared to enter The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training, they provided leadership to a Corps in Farmington, NM, which at the time was without an officer to run it.
While in Farmington, Captain Jonathan Harvey received the distinction of Rotarian of the Year and shortly after Man of the Year. Jonathan and Vickie also founded a program called “The Underground” in Farmington, a nightclub style setting for teens which to this day provides a safe haven to hundreds of young people every week, many of which ultimately turn from a life of drugs and alcohol because of the program. New Salvation Army leaders have also been cultivated from this program which started as a vision and through a series of community partnership became reality.
In 2004, Jonathan and Vickie entered The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training and graduated in June 2006. Upon graduation the Harvey’s were appointed to Yuma, Arizona as the County Coordinators. Their responsibilities included oversight of Boys and Girls Club of America programs in two border communities, a daily hot lunch program for the homeless, two thrift stores, a social services center and a variety of other services. In addition, Jonathan and Vickie provided pastoral leadership to two congregations and oversight of a Hispanic ministry. Jonathan and Vickie have been married for 17 years and have a 13-year-old son Zacharie and a 8-year-old daughter MacKenzie.
In June of 2010 the Harvey family were transferred to Suisun City, CA to pioneer the work of The Salvation Army in that community and open a new Corps Community Center in a facility currently under renovation. The new center will provide aquatics, fitness, sports, music and character development programs as well as spiritual enrichment activities.
Jonathan and Vickie love to interact with the community and welcome any opportunity to partner on community initiatives and guide people towards a new life in Christ. Contact the Harveys by calling (707) 439-7880.
